Earthquake Story

A shocking earthquake caused devastation in San Francisco Bay on Monday, September 25, killing two people and seriously injuring six.

“I was eating my breakfast when the room started rolling. I dove under the table just as I heard an explosion outside and a chunk of cement flew through my kitchen window. That’s when the screaming started across the street.”

The earthquake that occurred was considered powerful, according to scientists.

“The epicenter of the earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale, was under the Hayward Hills,” said Penny Gertz, a scientist from the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park.

The earthquake even caused the partial collapse of a major building, McHenry’s Auto Supply at 2342 Plum St.

"Twenty-one fire personnel, 12 police and five American Red Cross workers responded to the building collapse, with some arriving within four minutes of the quake," Vu said.

Though only two people were killed in this incident, reports of others have shown that, although very unfortunate for the families who lost their precious family members, San Francisco ought to be grateful that there wasn’t more damage done to their precious city.

"People as far south as Los Angeles and as far north as Redding felt the quake," Gertz said.

The names of the people lost have been omitted in respect to their families.

“We will miss him dearly,” an anonymous family member said. “I hope that he finds peace in a better place.”

Now government officials are looking into funding projects that will begin to construct buildings that were made to withstand the pressure and shaking of the earthquakes beneath them.

“For the next earthquake to come, we are determined to have no losses, and minimal injuries,” government official Kelly Smith said. “If money can save lives, then I can stand to live a little less comfortably.”
